AVG/ Free av/firewall

Post by Revolver »

Wasnt sure where to post since its not hardware or gaming and there isnt any other option under "computers" so here is where its going.

So for god knows how long it has been insisted (upon a family friend recommending it) that we use mcafee a.virus and firewall. its now expired and no one seems to care what we have so i figured the free option is the best option. But is AVG just an anti virus and is it even any good anymore, i know it used to be recommended a lot since it did the job well and was free.

Obviously a firewall is need (at least i think obviously) and is there any free ones out there? same goes for any anti spyware shit of malware whatever crap it all is, i aint got a clue really so can anyone point out some links and/or recommendations?

Thanks!

Edit: I think i have to pay for firewall basically, so whats the best option

Best option is NOD32.

Always comes up top or near the top in all independant antivirus reviews.

Although McAfee and Norton are getting better.

Kaspersky is also worth a look.

OK, with my mother and sister having a laptop each, plus this PC thats 3 pc's (cant you tell im an accountant) and with software4students that my sis has access to we can have Kaspersky full Internet Security for 3 PC's for £25 for the year.

Worth it?

I wouldn't rely on a software fire wall too much, if you can enable it on the router too.

This is a quick test and should let you know what if any ports are accessable to the outside world.

1) Norton constantly beats AVG in detection rates.
2) You say that AVG has found everything for you, how do you know it has? It may have completely missed some... 8)

But I would still use AVG over Norton because it's a lot faster and doesn't bog down your computer as much.
