I was gonna say Deus Ex, but i suppose technically thats an FPRPG....

Gotta have the odd puzzle thrown in for a change of tempo a la Half Life. And some cinematic to keep you gripped (CoD series). Other than that i agree.

Serious Sam anyone?

Never played Serious Sam.

HL2 did it brilliantly though.

It wasn't, get near the end of a level, oh shit the door is locked we are going to have to go back to the beginning and get a key so that I can go all the way back again to open it.

With HL2 you would get to a point and think, "well I can't jump that, and my crowbar is useless", so you would have to find out how to use the physics system to your advantage, although they were bloody simple. The one with the boat where you need to put the blue barrels under the ramp to make it higher. It came to my head immediately, I didn't even need to think about it. The better challenge was finding ways to kill the soldiers with limited ammo by using tactical shooting of barrels.

Doom 3 was more of a search and find but you didn't really have to go back on yourself. UT and Quake are just shoot the fuck out of anything that moves. Red Faction is blow the shit out of everything even if it doesn't move.
