I think it just gets a little too carried away with itself and Liam Neeson just doesn't fit the retired spy type character all that well. He acts it well (as you'd expect) but you just feel some of the set pieces get a little OTT. It needed to be more sophisticated.
It's also amazing how grown up and hot the daughter looks when she's shown all drugged up (thats not a spoiler, we all know she gets taken its in the name of the film) yet is the most typically annoying 17 year old American before
