It is still very linear. Occasionally you get the option of 2 paths to take but you will probably want to go down both for chests and CR from enemies.
Would be good to be able to select the party leader too but I guess that is partly due to the story which I keep getting confused with the L'cie, Fal'cie etc etc.

Re: Final Fantasy XIII
Those games just look confusing. Is it turn based still? Too many numbers flying around from what I see....

Re: Final Fantasy XIII
Not really turn based anymore. And yes it is hard to see what numbers are being dealt by which character especially when all 3 hit the opponent at the same time, but this was sometimes a problem in early FF games but much more so now.
The graphics though are stunning especially in the FMVs.
The linearity has been disappointing so far, hopefully it will open up. Worth a buy if you have 50 hours to spare. The game has been designed for new people, I think it is probably one of the reasons the stats were made so simple, having 2 rather than 5-6.

Re: Final Fantasy XIII
Happens all the time these days. Unfortunately dumbing down is common place unless you play a Morrowind title or a RTS/TBS title Total War etc. Games are more and more about profits and addictions these days. Funny really that games like CoD add in exp and "levelling" whereas a lot of the RPG's are dumbing down the Stats side of things. Soon enough there won't be a clear definition between the two.skeletor wrote:The linearity has been disappointing so far, hopefully it will open up. Worth a buy if you have 50 hours to spare. Even WoW confused me the first time I levelled up because it told me my str/agi/sta etc had increased by 1/2 points. I was so used to spending those points how I wanted to I spent ages trying to find my stats page where I could click the little "+" arrow.

Re: Final Fantasy XIII
The not being able to pick your leader is a right pain in the bollox. The linearity is still pissing me off. Fal`cie L`cie thing is a bit hard to wrap your head around at times, and for the love of god what the fuck is up with the loading screen story, it goes to fast to read and you cant fuckin scroll up or down to see what you missed. I seen a really cool screen shot of a wide open field ( kinda like in 10 where the battle against sin was fought by jeacht and the summoner ) where you where on a chocobo and there was a HUGE dinosaur type enemy was beside the chocobo.
Its so linear at times that the characters seem a bit to big for that part of the lvl.... But its still a great game and hopefully it will pick up in terms of being able to pick your on leader, actually explore a little, do some side quests, find hidden uber weapons/boss`s, get an airship.
I mean it HAS to have the traditional traits that make FF what they are, but i just cant see it turning out like that at the stage im at :S

Re: Final Fantasy XIII
That really pissed me off when I died in one of the battles. I had nearly finished it off (was the large robot that broke the floor and nearly fell on you in the scrapyard) and it killed off the leader, thought nothing of it, I had plenty of Phoenix Down's. Then the game basically stops and starts to fade. WTF!!!
Re: Final Fantasy XIII
Yeah is quite annoyin, dont know why thy put that system is, how hard would it have being that if the leader died, you simply controlled another character until leader is revived.
Gonna put in a few hours later try catch up with you, you far into it?
