Most 'Epic' Game(s) you've ever played

Post by Revolver »

What game is your most Epic? Which one has the fondest memories and sapped so much out of your life? I'm interested to see if any recent games (perhaps with the exception of Crysis) are actually that fondly remembered? I honestly get the feeling that some of the love for open world/sandbox gaming has taken away from the actualy experience itself. Don't the best games need some direction? I think Fallout 3 for example did the open world a lot better than Oblivion, which I just seemed to get lost in. It's alright having a main plot but I didn't know where the hell to go to complete it, or if I was a high enough level either... Anyway, thats detracting, the reason I am asking for this list, perhaps a top5 of your greatest games, is because I am a bit bored with my games at the moment, and i can only play Deus Ex so many times...

My top5 (at least, before i think of something else)

1. Deus Ex
2. Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (i played on xbox, now own it on PC, so either version counts, i actually think xbox was easier to control 8O )
3. All parts of the Half Life series, you cant list Half Life 1/2 or episodes or addons, they're all great.
4. GTA Vice City, I love everything about that game, wasnt too big, wasnt too small, fantastic music and clothes  . I wish I was born a few decades earlier. (on xbox too)
5. Max Payne 2, when that came out, it was probably the most engrossing game I had ever played, finished it in 2 sittings given its roughly 8 hour play through. But every minute was fantastic. You can't beat guarding wannabe gangster kid dressed up in a giant Baseball Bat Boy suit fitted with explosives!

The only thing Crysis will be remembered for is needing a super computer to run it at a decent frame rate.

For me, it has to be Doom. It pretty much pioneered all FPS from then on along with Wolfenstein and Quake.

The early Championship Managers as well but they went downhill after 1995-96.

Final Fantasy 6 will always be remembered too, really wish they would remake leaving the story etc in place.

I had some quality games on the commodore 64, I remember a Puff Dragon platform game and Dizzy! Lol. I was far too young, i can specifically remember this screenshot, it was the very start of a game and you had to combine some stuff to burn the door down I think. I had no idea what to do, man those were the days....

What a plot:
Grand Dizzy was feeling very down one day, so Dizzy and Daisy decided to cheer him up by baking him his favourite food, cherry pie! So off went Daisy to get some cherries from her cupboard and there were none to be seen! "Pogie's pinched the cherries!" she cried, as she saw Pogie's pawprint in the cupboard. "That darned fluffle. Come here you!" and Pogie promptly darted off into the enchanted forest to escape Daisy's rage. Dizzy and Daisy decided to go into the forest to catch Pogie and gather some more cherries at the same time. Whilst searching for Pogie they got lost and found a castle, where they thought they would find help, but it seemed deserted. They looked in the castle for Pogie, but Daisy caught herself on a mystic spinning wheel. She started feeling really sleepy, so she found a bed and went to sleep. "Wake up Daisy, wake up!" shouted Dizzy. But before he could wake her up, Rockwart the troll caught him and locked him up under ground!

Most recent epic game is definately god of war 3...

Old ones are :

1) Star wars, as rev said. But also the battlefront ones.
2) Timesplitters
3) Resident evils
4) James Bond Golden Eye N64
5) Baulders Gate

They are the first oldies that come to my head anyway. Thought i wouldnt add in the obvious like sonic and mario. Also quite a bit of my childhood was playing the original pokemon games lol.
I'm back :)

I loved Dizzy, was great. I saw it as an excellent teaching tool. Always drowned in the first bit of water though.

Did you ever play Zool!?

Can't get to that link at work Skel, I just did an edit with the plot from Dizzy Prince of the Yolkfolk (what the screeny is from).

Have to agree the first time I played Doom was ace, along with Quake, I would even put Duke3D up there because I was very young when I first played that, it was the first game I played networked. And it had poledancers you could pay for tit action!

I never really got into the resi evils, but if I go back to playstation days, the first medal of honours were amazing, and I don't know how I could forget Syphon Filter and Metal Gear Solid. Man those games were fantastic. I can still here the ching of picking up rations and ammo from MGS. I played the second one on xbox but was far less thrilling, 3rd one I never got the chance cos it was ps2, same goes for 4.

Kinda struggling for screenshots being at work, i think this was level 2 maybe

You have to find some bombs in park, then you go into a subway and I got motored by a train, didnt realise you had to keep switching tracks and hide in door ways as you run down.

another eidt: MGS - Fighting Liquid Snake in the helicopter and then rapelling down the wall afterwards, just class. I was so obssessed me and my cousin even got the VR missions just because you could play as Grey Fox/Cyborg ninja. Psycho Mantis, play with the controller in port 2 and then he cant read your mind, genius, who thought that up?!
