New Hard Drive

Post by joeb619 »

I need a new hard drive, but don't want to be spending a lot on it. My current one holds 583GB and its almost full so i dunno how big i should get. Anyone have any idea? And where to get it?
I'm back :)

Ebuyer.com
Scan.co.uk
Overclockers.co.uk
Dabs.com
Misco.co.uk

Whereever it's cheapest. Stick to one of the bigger name brands (Western Digital, Samsung, Seagate, Hitachi), look for:

16MB or 32MB cache (bigger the better)
7200RPM (can get 10000RPM but they are noisy and expensive)

Work out the best GB to £...

Just using the prices on Overclockers for Seagate drives (scan/ebuyer are usually cheaper as are Samsung drives and are just as good)

80GB : 2.58GB per £
160GB : 5.00GB per £
250GB: 7.81GB per £
320GB: 8.65GB per £
500GB: 11.63GB per £
750GB: 12.30GB per £
1000GB: 13.70GB per £
1500GB: 18.75GB per £
2000GB: 15.75GB per £

So the most cost effective is a 1.5TB drive followed by a 2TB drive, but you may not want to spend ~£130 on a hard drive so the 2TB would be out the question.

1.5TB drives are around £80, 1TB around £73, but as you can see you are getting an extra 500GB for £7 rather than ~£40 you would be spending on a seperate 500GB drive in the future.

USB plug and play external hard drives are slower than an internal drive through SATA interface although do have the benefit that they can be moved around easier and don't require you to open up your computer.

you forgot to mention that the fuckers can just die all of a sudden, i`d steer clear of WD external drives, while i was lookin on the net to try fix my one that just died i came across loads of people that had the same problems with wd
