Need an upgrade now as my AGP 6800 cant handle the required native resolution of my new 20" w/s monitor 1600x1050.

will this card perform or not or is there something else i could look at, talking into account i only want to spend between £100-£125,
and i the only game run on my pc is CSS. I also need to get a M/B with pci-x too.
As you said you will need a new motherboard with PCI-e to get the 8600 unless nVidia release an AGP version.
What processor do you have?
ATi has the best AGP card out at the moment the X1950Pro which retails around £150.
If you have a P4 on a socket 775 motherboard get a new motherboard with PCI-e. If you can wait you may be able to get one of the new ATi cards that are coming out. Supposed to be very cheap in comparison to the nVidia cards.
Yeah, defo gonna change my mainboard, got a amd3400 SKT754 fitted at the mo.
What i can tell The high end AGP cards are still pretty slow in comparison to the pci-e mid range cards. The skt754 mainbords are pretty cheap too.
the x1950 cards look good but i think its time to move forward with pci-e and with directx 10 support. these at the specs i look at, am i right that the 8600 is better? I have read that people have o/c there their 8600 to 8800 speeds.

The problem with AMD's socket 754 is that it was made obsolete by AMD within 3 months.
The 754 successor the 939 is also obsolete now with AM2 socket.
And don't be fooled by clock speeds. Clock speeds to not mean everything.
My CPU is only 3.0GHz (1.8GHz stock) but is a hell of a lot better than a Pentium 4 3.0GHz, if you wanted equal performance from a Pentium 4 it would have to be above 6GHz.
If you can I would switch to Intel Core 2 Duo, but if you don't have the money spare get a cheap 754 to hold you on till you are ready for the whole lot.
If you do, do that then the 8600 will be your best bet even though it has a small memory bus compared to the 8800. You won't get equal performance if you overclocked it to the same speed as the 8800's.
