With all the problems you had with Windows in the past, I would suggest downloading Ubuntu and putting it on to a CD.

Boot up to the CD in the "live" environment, (i.e. running from the CD rather than doing anything to your hard drives) and run some torture tests from there to rule out any Windows based problem.

Also on the Ubuntu CD should be a copy of memtest86+ which you can use to test your memory is good (not yours, your computer's RAM).

I assume you have cleaned the fans and heatsinks etc?

well tbh this win 7 has been better than xp..apart from the non aero thing which came back after update.

as far as dust.. OMG ... one bit i havent cleaned in ages was the PSU... the whole of the back room floor was covered in clumps of fluff... it was mega clogged... and im wondering if that was fan1 that was hitting 80c ..cos now its only hitting about 40 8O

i de fluffed all of it..took the graphics card apart... re- did the paste in it which i think i overdid last time as it had squidged out... cleaned it as well.

did the CPU ..now dust free.

also i found 2 screws that were rattling around behind the mother board that had dropped in there 8O which i removed.

one PC-E slot had a wedge of crap in it touching both sides also.... which was gouged out.

ill see what happens now on css..deveil spawn went on for about half an hour and got bored so turned it off..which is a good sign.

ill report back...

The fan won't change direction unless you physically moved it.

This is the noise of my PC while playing CSS at the moment (may need to turn the sound up a bit):

welli m back to square one again... having fixed the rig from crashing.. i had 2 weeks of it working before it went tits.
this time its lagging baddly... on win7 even the mouse pointer is lagging across the screen... its like a single core cpu or something.

i thought maybe the HD was failing as when i booted it up from the old xp HD inside..it worked fine... even after a clean install on the failing HD it was still lagging.

so off down to the local pc shop and i got a 1tb western digital caviar black or whatever it was called.. and did a fresh install.

now first thing was it wouldnt boot from the HD i had to have the win 7 disk in ?? :( after pissing about i unplugged all the sata cables and made sure the HD was in sata 1 in the board.. it has booted up without the disk now... i dont know if i re connect the cd-rom and spare HD whether it will work yet.. :?: could it be a problem with the board itself im thinking.. :?:

core temps are at 58c idle... im wondering if it was damaged during the weeks and weeks of crashing and heat probs.

so ive pissed about in the bios today..cant see to much in it that would cause massive lagging probs.

AVG free says all of my HDs external and internal are clean.

the local shop will test the board and chip for £6.. i may drop it in on monday.

it seems as long as the display is basic it will run ok..as soon as i have it all looking pretty it lagges..

and on CSS earlyer it was robotics city :(

doing my head in now... might be looking at a new bundle if this board/cpu is damaged... any recomendations people :?: :?: :?:

Sounds weird to me. If the rig is running properly with XP, I would say the board is fine. If the graphics are running fine on XP and i it's running fine on Win7 with basic graphics, my guess is display drivers. Are you sure you have the proper/latest installed?

As Liq has said, have you got the latest graphics drivers installed?
