Crazy.
To be fair, it's called role-playing.... It is a role-playing game after all.

The term RPG had become more associated with stats than the actual sense of role-playing. It's also quite a good way to play because if you really can't do everything in these games so why not have replay value. Instead of trying to do loads of stuff with one character you can have multiple chars doing diff things. It is quite hard to do though because unfortunately its in our human nature to go with familiarity and do what you've done before. However I know from experience doing different things is most rewarding. On oblivion I must have tried to play it 10 times over in the last few years, usually taking similar routes yet when I started my last character I went a bit further up a hill that id been up a several times before. There was a whole settlement I had never seen before. Along with the famous "in the painting" quest which was as brilliant as was said. Point being I never went looking for it, I just found it. That's why these games are so awesome.

You'll want a 360 controller or equivalen to get the most out of it in my opinion. But trust me the windows version of xbox 360 controller is awesome and for some reason, usually cheaper than the actual xbox one yet it works on both. Probably because console gamers are too stupid and don't realise that £30+ for a controller is a rip off :P

Are you comparing cable to wireless?

Cable with the wireless controller is purely for charging.

No, you can get a microsoft controller for windows that comes with a usb receiver. Looking at the prices though the white ones seem to be phased out and they're £40 now. Obviously rare these days. I picked mine up for £22 or something silly back when they were still charging £35+ for xbox controllers.
