Got back from golf. Wasn't as bad as I thought, but I have lost a fair amount of skin on my left thumb. Would of been a good idea to wear gloves.

Was using a 6 iron and occasionally getting 150 yards, which after just looking online, is pretty damn good considering the range is between 140-160 yards.

I played for the first time in about 5 months last Thursday (I think it was Thursday). The weather just hasn't been there for it.

I started off hitting a 10 on a part 4 first hole lol. T shot went out of bounds, swiftly followed up by my drop shot also screwing left over the trees, so that put me on 5 before id got half way down fairway (playing proper rules i should have tee'd off again but we just take a drop penalty in line with where it went out especially if people are behind you or if it's 1st tee with people watching lol), then i overshot my iron lay up to go over the green, over hit my chip back to the front of the green and 3 putted afterwards, it wasnt pretty.

After that though, it got better doing most holes in 5's and 6's and hitting 230yard+ drives. Very impressed with myself. On the last hole i hit par on a par 4 which was a nice way to end it. All in all not bad for a course I had never played before.

My major fuck up at the moment though is my putter, i got a shit one from Sports Direct on the way home because I didnt have one. Boy can you tell its cheap shit. Most of my 6's and 7's are usually because i 3 or 4 putt, its just terrible. It said £22.99 on the label, then i got 30 crappy donnay balls for a tennor. Got to the till and the bloke says "£16.99 then please". I wasn't gonna complain, £17 for a putter and 30 balls. Only thing is, shit balls are harder to hit well(sounds stupid but its true), so while i have more balls for cheap money, they're also easier to lose to start with. Still at my skill level, im not gonna spend £40 on half a dozen balls thats for sure.

Nah no point getting good balls until you can hit the shit ones properly.

Only been down the driving range so far. Got golf lessons for my birthday which should be entertaining...

I assume you're right handed? If so, easiest starter tip before your lessons is keep the left arm straight during swing(I take it you've been shown how to grip properly by someone?). Right arm bends as it draws back, left will naturally try to bend if you pull really far back, i dont know how much you've done so can't say if you're doing full or half wings at the moment.

Every shot is different (obviously) but in general, feet shoulder width apart. To work out how close to stand to the ball you put the club head behind the ball where you would hit it then the top of the club should rest just above your right knee.

If you're using a driver the ball should be in line with your left ankle, as you drop to woods/hybrids it comes back a bit (in general) then a bit more for low irons (5/6/7) then you can pretty much play from bang in between the middle of your legs when using the higher irongs and wedges. So, 8/9 iron and P/S Wedge.

Watch the pro's. You can learn such simple stuff by watching PGA on skysports. And use Youtube. A lot of good tutorials on there. My boss has been playing for 20 years and said he learnt more over last weekend watching a 15minute youtube vid than he had playing for all that time playing. Went down the course and took 2 shots off.

It's so simple, but just damn fucking hard to play.

Yeah my dad has told me all those basics. I only do half swings as I lose it if I do a full swing. I can still get over 150 yards with a 5 iron and shitty range balls.

Biggest problem I have found is keeping my back straight during the swing and lifting just before hitting the ball which meant I topped it a lot.

Hmm, I would say try practising with a sand wedge or pitching wedge. Line up your shot and just do half swings backwards and forwards trying not to move your back. The wedges are the shortest clubs and easiest to use so stick to them.

I wouldnt even bother with a 5 iron yet. If you get on the course you won't really use much as a novice other than 7,8,9,PW,SW with a 3,5 wood and driver.
The lower you go down the irons the harder it gets, and if you get a bit of a rough lie you wont be looking to use a flat faced iron very often. Have you ever seen a 1 or 2 iron? I'm not surprised they arent used anymore.

I'm struggling to use my hybrid at the moment which replaces the 4/5 iron. The thing i don't like is it looks like a wood or driver (not cavity backed or bladed)so its hard to grasp mentally that you need to swing it and skim the surface a bit more. I have the same trouble using fairway woods. I'm ok if I can stick it on a T but of the grass its not the easiest thing in the world to hit. When you hit the hybrid or wood well on the fairway though, it does make you smile :D

I hit a 7 iron out of thick grass, over a tree 20 yards short of the green last week. I was so proud of myself haha. It was probably about 120 yards out the rough. Good times.
